Conceived by civic promoter George Cheung and designed by architect Peter Fung, the dramatic Chinatown Gate landmark at Cermak and Wentworth, was based on a wall in Beijing and installed in 1975. As you gaze up at the hand painted ornamental tiles, four large characters translate “The world belongs to the commonwealth”. It was a famous saying in the early part of the last century and reflects the drive, determination and spirit of the Chinese people.
